THE IMPORTANCE OF A NON-TOXIC HOME
“When a flower doesn’t bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower” – Alexander Den Heijer
Ever wonder why a flower or plant will grow great in one climate and not at all in another or why it blooms in one room of your house or area of your garden, but dies quickly in another? It’s simply the plants way of letting you know which environment it can thrive in and which it can’t.
The human body is designed the same way. Our cells are constantly renewing and regenerating, doing what they know how to do best – heal. However, when we live in a house or work in an office, factory, shop or restaurant that is constantly bombarding our body with chemicals from air fresheners, disinfectants, hand soap, customers perfumes, etc. our body starts to react in a negative way and slowly our cells become toxic and can no longer perform the protective function for which they were designed.
It can take years for this toxic build up to be created and as it is happening we start to notice signs, symptoms and signals from our body warning us that something is wrong, much like the flower allegory. Most of us just brush it off and think as we are getting older it must be “normal” or we put it down to “just stress.”
We need to accept the seemingly obvious fact that a toxic environment can make people sick and cause disease to be expressed in the body in many different forms, such as cancer, autoimmune disease, neurological, to name but a few, and if we don’t take action at the very least in our home, where we have the power to control things, then we may have to face the consequences at some stage that our body can no longer function correctly.
When it comes to the manufacturers of our everyday cleaners and cosmetics that we buy in the supermarket did you know that the term “Fragrance” is considered a trade secret? Companies are not legally bound to disclose what chemicals make up the scent they use. It is often dozens, if not hundreds of toxic chemicals, which we breathe in, day in, day out and these “fragrances” create a toxic overload of free radical damage and eventually the oxidative stress is too much for the body to handle.
Some products release dangerous chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Other harmful ingredients include ammonia and bleach. Even “natural fragrances” can react to produce dangerous pollutants indoors. VOCs and other chemicals released when using cleaning supplies also contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions and headaches. Studies are underway to assess how these chemicals affect people who have asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
Cleaning supplies and household products containing VOCs and other toxic substances can include, but are not limited to:
- Aerosol spray products, including health, beauty and cleaning products
- Air fresheners
- Chlorine bleach
- Laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid
- Dry cleaning chemicals
- Rug and upholstery cleaners
- Furniture and floor polish
- Oven cleaners
So, what can we do about this? The great news is we can turn a toxic home into a healthier clean environment where our body can thrive again. This is not a task that can be done overnight, however with the right knowledge, patience and research we can all slowly make the changes in our home that are needed for a healthy functioning body.
Start by reading all the labels on your cleaning supplies and household products that you currently have. This will help you identify the potential dangers in your home and make you more aware of what is a better option the next time you shop. Choose products that do not contain or have reduced amounts of VOCs, fragrances, irritants and flammable ingredients. Take a look at your cookware and research which options are best for your health, such as glass or stainless steel.
Avoid using toxic air fresheners altogether and instead replace them with a stylish diffuser and Organic Essential Oils. Besides adding a pleasant natural fragrance to any room, essential oils have many diverse effects and benefits. There are plenty of diffusers on the market to choose from which help create a home environment that you’ve always desired. From choosing relaxing Lavender Oil to energising Bergamot Oil, anti-viral, antifungal and antibacterial Lemon Oil or healing Frankincense Oil, you can change your oils daily to suit the benefits your body desires.
We can also make changes to the Hand Soap in our home, as let’s face it this is a product that we constantly use in our bathrooms and kitchens, especially under the current situation we all find ourselves in, so finding an eco-friendly, soft and less toxic product is a must.
Another top cleaning product we must swap when re-evaluating our home environment is our Laundry Liquid. Think about it; this is a product that we use to wash the clothes we wear ALL day, the towels we use on our hands and face and the bed sheets we sleep in ALL night long. This is definitely an area that can create chemical sensitivities and a toxic overload, so we need to swap our laundry liquid for a high quality healthier option.
The same can be said for our Multipurpose Cleaner, Dishwasher Detergent, Liquid Dish Soap and Dryer Sheets. We clean our tables, kitchens, bathrooms and dishes with these and the last thing we want is extra chemicals in our food, on work surfaces or the toilets we sit on. When we are bombarded by these chemicals 24hrs a day, it’s no wonder most of us, if not all, will have to deal with illness at some stage in our lives.
I realise it is not easy to make all of these changes at once and it’s certainly difficult to break a habit of a lifetime, but if we slowly make these changes in our home, over time our body will thank us for it and I encourage you to do so.
Sadly, many of us were raised to use some of the most hazardous products on the planet and not think anything of it. Toxic chemicals have become the norm, but we should give it a second thought and focus on using natural cleaning products as opposed to the everyday cleaners you can pick up at just about any store.
Considering our skin is the largest organ in the body and one of the most complicated, providing us with crucial airtight, watertight and flexible barriers between the outside world and the highly regulated systems in our body, it deserves a cleaner environment to live in, because the more we overload it with toxins the harder it is for the skin to fight off bugs, allergens and carcinogens via the parts of our immune system that exist in our skin. The quality and condition of the skin greatly contribute to the perception of wellness, youth and beauty. Let’s help teach the next generation about true health and how it starts in our own home with the products we use in our daily lives.
